How to grow your online blogging business even if you’re feeling stuck!
#1 – Invest in your online business (even if you’re not ready!)
If you’re stuck in your business, maybe it’s time to upgrade and invest in order to grow your online blogging business to the next level. This may seem crazy especially if you’re just starting to make money and not necessarily paying all the bills. You may not feel ready to invest in your business. But that is actually holding you back. If you need something in order to move your business forward or make you more productive, then you absolutely need to go for it!
Upgrade your software, uplevel your business
During my mompreneur mastermind, we were talking about upgrading software. For example, maybe you were using a free version of accounting software, but to uplevel your business, you need to upgrade to the paid version of Quickbooks. Upgrading to the paid software will help you get your books done faster and more efficiently since you have access to the entire program. And more importantly, you will feel more professional in your business (it’s a mindset, really!)
Another personal example is when I upgraded to a time tracking software called Harvest (affiliate link). And this was a game changer for me (and still is!). I have a service-based business with clients and Harvest helps me track my time every day. So what I realized when I started tracking my time on my projects was that I wasn’t charging nearly enough money for my client projects. I realized how much time I was spending on these projects and they were taking far too long. I started to work on streamlining my processes and just being aware of how much time I was spending on certain projects and where my time was spent working every single week.
Those are just a couple examples but the main takeaway is that you need to invest to take your business to the next level. Of course, you need to evaluate if the investment will help you move forward in your business. Don’t think of the investment as taking money away from your salary for yourself, but think of it as investing in order to grow your business. I know you’ll be happy you did!
#2 – Identify what’s holding you back and solve the problem
This is something I personally struggle with ALL.THE.TIME. But you need to solve the problem in order to move forward and grow your online blogging business. If you’re feeling stuck like you can’t move to the next level, you need to identify what’s holding you back. If you don’t, you won’t move forward. It sounds harsh but it’s so true…I’ve experienced this SO many times in my business.
I’m in the process of expanding my service-based business to add products, such as the Plan Your Website Workbook, and an online membership community called, “The Tech Connect”. My service-based business is doing well…but I felt that I needed to expand my customers and reach more folks who couldn’t afford my services but needed help with tech systems, integrations, and online strategies. I’ve been working on how I’m going to do that. I kept running into this constant problem because I was trying to start this whole new side of my business (really like starting a whole new business) and I never had enough time to move these ideas forward. I was stuck!
Was I moving my ideas forward? Did I take the action I needed to grow my business? No, I was stuck!
The answer was, “No”. I had identified the problem but now I needed to solve it. I was stuck and then I started to think of ways that I could solve my problem and move my business forward. I decided that I needed to streamline and add processes to my business.
I’m REALLY resistant to checklists, processes, all these things because I’m a creative entrepreneur. Processes are super duper boring. But I also realized that I’m not going to move my business forward unless I suck it up.
How did I solve the problem?
Basically, I was using Trello to manage my day-to-day projects but it wasn’t working anymore. I started looking at Asana again and it’s added some great new features. Specifically, there’s a workflow feature that’s similar to Trello without going into too much into detail 🙂
So, I’m moving my projects over to Asana. As far as checklists, processes and my day-to-day tasks or things that I need to get done on a regular basis – I’m putting it all into Asana. I’m writing down details of all the processes that I do on a regular basis and putting those checklists into Asana. It’s not easy….this is a very time-consuming process but I realized that I would NEVER move forward. And I wanted to become more productive, streamlined and efficient. I’m feeling that I have a clear solution to my problem and it feels amazing.
So how will you get unstuck from your business?
Here are the steps you need to take:
- First, you need to identify what’s holding you back. Why are you stuck?
- Second, you need to figure it out and solve your problem. Get unstuck!
- Third, you need to take action. Start doing the work!
Sort it out…don’t ignore it! I’m happy that I did because I feel like now I’m finally unstuck and moving forward in my business!
#3 – Take a vacation (or break) and be more productive
The third point seems counter productive but you need to try to unplug and take a vacation. Yes, I know you’re working really hard in your business. Yes, I know you don’t think you deserve a break but trust me it helps! You can take a vacation, and you can choose to have a day that you unplug. There are many different ways to do it. Taking a walk outside, meditation, journaling outside, etc.
One thing that I noticed when I took a vacation this past week, was how nice it was to be completely unplugged from my computer. It just felt really great. So when I was coming back to my business, I was ready to take it on because I allowed myself some space away. I allowed myself some time for my brain to unwind and unravel and not think about anything I needed to do to move my business forward.
But if you can’t take a vacation, if you don’t have the time or it’s not something you can do right now, there’s little things that you can do. Just making time every day to unplug and take time for yourself. You’ll be really astounded at how this may help you move forward in your business. When you walk away and unplug, you will then allow yourself the space in your brain to actually solve your problem and get unstuck. It sounds crazy but it happens all the time. Wherever you’re at in business right now and life – if you’re saying to yourself, “It’s summertime and I just want to enjoy life and take a break” – that’s awesome! Have fun!
