Today, my topic is all about why you’re NOT making money blogging. I know this is a hot topic because there are so many people that are working so hard, blogging about their business, trying to post anywhere from one time a week to seven times a week, and doing, doing, doing, and maybe not seeing the results that they want with their blog and business. It may not just be blogging, it could be trying to create an online presence for your business. Or selling your next product/service. But I’ve got a few tips for you that may seem obvious but are so important to the success of your business. So let’s get into it!!!
I’ll be sharing with you, “Why You’re Not Making Money From Your Blog – Part 1” (and how to fix it), including:
- #1 Reason – You’re not making money blogging; You didn’t add your product or service to your website
- #2 Reason –You’re not making money blogging; You didn’t make it easy for your customer to buy your product or service
How to make money blogging (Part 1)
#1 Reason You’re Not Making Money Blogging – You didn’t add your product or service to your website or blog
The Number #1 Reason you’re not making money blogging: you didn’t add your product or service to your website. And I know this one seems so freakin’ obvious, but you would be SHOCKED at how many folks don’t actually add their products or services to their blog.
Maybe you’re not ready for full disclosure or struggling with the tech side of selling your products online. Maybe you have a few pages or blog up and running….but do you actually have all of your products or services listed on your website? It’s not a good idea to be too casual about your offer like, “Oh yeah, I do X, Y, Z,” and then your stuff is not listed anywhere (I used to do this a lot). If you’re reading this and you can relate..you need to fix it 🙂
And guess what? Potential customers are not reading your mind! They don’t know what you do. They could meet you and they may want to hire you eventually, but if you don’t actually have pages promoting your services, they just forget about you. YIKES. How can you fix this?
Map Out Your Products/Services
The first thing you should do: map out all of your product/service offerings. Maybe you’re not promoting all of your services right now, but that’s okay. Do a brain dump and write down ALL the products and services that you currently offer, some that you are not offering right now, and future ideas.
Ask yourself these questions and write them down:
- What products/services are you currently offering?
- What other products/services do you offer sometimes but not right now? For example, I don’t always offer my coaching services at certain times of the year.
- What future products would you like to offer? What does that package or program look like?
Based on the above information, what’s the most important thing you need to add to your website right away? Think of it this way – can you afford to miss out on $$$ by not adding this product to your blog ASAP? It may seem overwhelming to add ALL of your offerings at once…that’s why you should rank order your list by importance and make a plan to add them gradually (and avoid overwhelm).

#2 Reason You’re Not Making Money Blogging – You didn’t make it EASY for your customer to buy your product or service online
The Number #2 Reason why you’re not making money from your blog: You didn’t make it EASY for them to BUY your product or service on your website. Again, if you meet a potential customer and they’re like, “Oh my gosh, I totally want this product XYZ,” then you need to make it SUPER EASY for them to buy. A no brainer, really!
Sell Your Services Online
For example, I have a service-based business where I offer web design, marketing and consulting to my clients. I was recently onboarding a new client and explaining how everything works. In my business, I require new clients to pay a certain percentage fee up front when hiring me for a project or service. My client also has the option of paying online by credit card or by check to start the project. I just send them the invoice with payment due and they can quickly pay online. You really want to make it super duper easy for your client to pay you!
Sell Your E-Books Online
If you have an e-book or workbook for sale, you may be promoting it in different ways like on Amazon, but make sure you also add your e-book to your website or blog. You want to make it really easy for people to buy your e-book. There are a couple different ways you can add your digital e-book to your website.
If you use WordPress, you can use a plugin called Easy Digital Downloads. To sell my e-book, the Plan Your Website Workbook, I use WordPress with the Easy Digital Downloads plugin. My e-book is for sale 24-7…awesome right? Another popular one for selling your e-book online is called Send Owl. That’s for digital product transactions only such as music, audio files, any kind of digital files, e-books, workbooks, anything digital really.
Sell Your Coaching Services Online
If you’re a coach or a consultant of any kind, your clients can easily book AND pay for their session with Acuity Scheduling. You can set up your packages, and people can click to book you and pay. If your client wants to book, let’s say, an hour of your time, or if you offer certain coaching and consulting packages, you can send them a link for a client to book you and make a payment quickly with Acuity. So easy – I love it!
Sell Your Products Online
Now, if you are a product-based business, so if you sell a physical product, you need an e-commerce site to sell your products online. For example, let’s say you design and create invitations and you want folks to buy your invitations online. You could sell your invitations on Etsy but they take a processing fee. Or you could sell your invitations on your OWN website.
The shopping cart software that I use is called WooCommerce. WooCommerce is a fantastic plugin and a full shopping cart solution for WordPress. It works great! If you’re not in love with WooCommerce, or you don’t like WordPress for whatever reason, the other really popular e-commerce platform is called Shopify. It’s another great e-commerce solution to get you started!
